Ron White Comedy Series
Since 2008 the Armed Forces Foundation has partnered with stand-up comedian Ron White for an annual comedy show at the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC. Ron White, a Navy veteran himself, brings his routine of laughter and storytelling to an audience of
paying supporters and wounded service members. This past year’s show, held in March of 2010, raised over $150,000 in funds for the AFF. More personally, Ron White and crew took an entire day out of their busy schedule to host a barbecue for wounded troops at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center where Ron and crew spent the afternoon mingling with the troops and their families. Though the past few years proved a success for Ron and the AFF, this year he and the folks at Country Music Television decided to kick things up a notch and take the show on the road to Country Music’s greatest shrine, the Grand Ole Opry House. On February 15, 2011, Ron White will host a Celebrity Salute to the Troops with musical guests Rascal Flatts and other to-be-announced performers. The evening features some very special guests, 500 of our closest friends from Fort Campbell Kentucky. Ron has invited Active Duty Service members, the Spouses of Deployed Soldiers and Surviving Spouses, from the base, to come in for a night of music, laughter and special recognition.
Purple Heart Ride
The Armed Forces Foundation has again partnered with the Maryland Blue Knights, Chapter IX Motorcycle Club to continue the tradition of uplifting and supporting our wounded service men and women who have served our nation with great valor. Last year, the Armed Forces Foundation/Blue Knights International Motor Club Purple Heart Ride
drew the attention of 200 motorcyclists to the stories of pain and perseverance facing the wounded. The stories of hope and healing are never far from the smiles brought to the faces of our soldiers when they see the outpouring of support by total strangers; strangers who make it their duty to show gratitude to those who give so much. This event allows a group of military supporters to couple a cause they are passionate about supporting with a hobby they love; and the results are tremendous. The Purple Heart Ride generates thousands of dollars in monetary assistance each year. This money goes directly into the hands of those who need it. It is the Armed Forces Foundation’s duty, honor and privilege to sponsor the Purple Heart Ride; one which turns the efforts of motorcycle enthusiasts into help for the military community.
Project American Heroes
Thanks once again to our friends at Route 66 Motorsports and Super Chevy Magazine, this year’s Project American Heroes car, a 1970 Chevelle SS, debuted at the Barrett Jackson Collector Car Auction on June 26. When the gavel dropped, the car sold for $250,000, the most of any car at the auction, with all proceeds going directly to the AFF’s programs. More info can be found at www.projectamericanheroes.net. The Armed Forces Foundation (AFF) along with our partners Super Chevy Magazine and
Route 66 Motorsports, are proud to announce the Project American Heroes III car; a fully restored and highly modified 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. This year’s car debuted at the 2010 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auction in Orange County, CA and on Saturday, June 26, sold for $250,000. All proceeds benefited the AFF, which was the largest amount procured for any charity at the auction.
“We are so fortunate to have partners like Super Chevy Magazine and Route 66 Motorsports, whose hard work and generosity makes it possible for us to pursue our mission and lend a helping hand to our men and women in uniform,” said Armed Forces Foundation President Patricia Driscoll. “The money raised will be used to assist military families facing financial hardships and provide them with the support they so desperately deserve.” Project American Heroes began in 2007, and in addition to Super Chevy, Route 66 Motorsports and the AFF, the Project American Heroes program works with over 30 automotive performance aftermarket companies to assemble the finished project. This year’s Chevelle is powered by a GM Performance 550hp Supercharged LSA engine and TCI 6-speed automatic transmission and is equipped with custom Boze billet aluminum wheels and high performance suspension system from Detroit Speed Engineering. Additional parts for the car were donated by National Parts Depot, Edelbrock, Fesler Billet, Baer Brakes, Sony, Strange Engineering, Legendary Auto Interiors, Specialty Power Windows, Thermo Tec, PPG Paints, K&N Engineering, Painless Performance, AutoRad Radiators, Inland Empire Driveline, Soffseal, and Old Air Products. “We are thrilled with the participation and enthusiasm over Project American Heroes,” said Super Chevy magazine publisher, Ed Zinke. “The success of this year’s sale was beyond our wildest dreams. We would again like to offer a special thank you to our readers for their interest, our partners who contributed their time, skill and materials, and the military personnel who helped determine their final design. Everyone’s contributions made this project a huge success.
Golf and Crab Gold Tournament
Named for the late Jerry Woods, the founder of the tournament and passionate supporter of the military community, this tournament raises funds for the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. Each year corporate sponsors come out to play a best ball 4-man tournament followed by an all you can eat crab lunch and awards ceremony at Harris Crab House.
The tournament’s patron, Jerry Woods served as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam era and
more recently in the private sector as Director of Legislative Affairs for Northrop Grumman. A lifetime supporter of the military, Mr. Woods devoted his tremendous personal energy to supporting the Armed Forces Retirement Home. It was through this passion that the Congressional Golf and Crab tournament came into being, and the AFF hopes to honor Mr. Woods’ legacy by continuing the tournament in his name and continuing to donate all proceeds to the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
